Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor, DST Technology Enabling Center, Nitte (Deemed to be University) delivered a session on “Igniting ideas – Opportunities in entrepreneurship” at Bearys Institute of Technology, Mangalore on August 25, 2025. Dr. Abdullah Gubbi, Head of Electronics and Communication Engineering coordinated the event that was attended by about 80 faculty and students. Dr. Karunasagar explained about inventions and innovations and their importance in developing new technologies or at translational level. He introduced the concept of technology readiness level (TRL) and the process of design thinking involving stages like empathise, define, ideate, prototype, and test for developing any technology or product that would meet the consumer and market needs. He highlighted about invention, intellectual property and the need to protect intellectual property through patent, design registration, trade mark, geographical indication and copyright. He emphasized that while invention is about new discovery or creation of something very new, innovation is the process of taking an invention and improving it or applying it in a useful, practical and valuable way. With examples, he highlighted about product innovation, process innovation, marketing innovation, business model innovation, service delivery innovation, technological innovation, policy and regulation innovation, disruptive innovations and incremental innovations. Case studies of product development supported by DST Technology Enabling Center, Nitte (Deemed to be University). The presentation was followed by discussion session. Both staff and students asked questions and clarifications.
