Betel Leaf Tea

On 25 Feb 2021, a Technology Transfer Agreement was signed between Nitte (Deemed to be University) and M/S Eshanya Beverages for commercialization of a patented technology for production of beverages from betel leaf. Mr H S Sandeep Kumar, Promotor and Director, Eshanya Beverages and Dr Alka Kulkarni, Registrar, Nitte DU signed the agreement. The Chancellor of Nitte DU, Shri Vinay Hegde handed over the technology package to Eshanya Beverages in the presence of Dr Shantharam Shetty, Shri Vishal Hegde, Pro Chancellors, Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor, Shri Rajendra, Finance Director; Dr Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor, Research and Patent; Dr Indrani Karunasagar, Director, DST NU-TEC; Dr Prakash, Dean, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy and Dr Mamatha, B.S., Assistant Professor and developer of the technology for beverages from betel leaf .

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) Technology Enabling Centre at Nitte DU (NU-TEC) has the mandate to facilitate development and transfer of technologies for commercialization. DST NU-TEC facilitated the development of technology for the production of beverages from betel leaf, which is rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial molecules. Betel leaf is also considered to act as a natural appetizer, digestive, mild stimulant, aphrodisiac and refreshing mastication. The technology was developed bearing in mind regulatory as well as consumer requirements. The product was evaluated by a team of organoleptic assessors as well as by analytical laboratory before release for commercialization. The product is expected to reach the market in a couple of months. M/S Eshanya Beverages is exploring even overseas market for the products.

Technology transfer agreement with antidote industry New Delhi

On 31 March 2022, a technology transfer agreement was signed between Nitte (DU) and Nadia Singh Bahl and Carol Singh, Founders of ANTIDOTE Industry, New Delhi. The technology for spray dried almond milk powder was developed by Dr Mamatha BS and Dr Feby Luckose, Food Safety and Biotechnology Division, NUCSER. Spray dried almond milk powder is an innovative product that can replace conventional dairy milk for making beverages, smoothies and soups. Using spray drying technology, liquid almond milk was transformed to a dried material through exposure to high temperature air, for a very short time. By this process, the nutrients are retained in the final product. This product has long shelf-life and reduced volume for storage and transportation and was well accepted through organoleptic assessment.

Periodontal probe

The periodontal temperature probe is a unique device for measuring temperature in the subgingival area and periodontal pockets. The device is an indigenous product with the required level of sensitivity and provides the desired level of comfort for the dental practitioner. The device can be used as an efficient diagnostic tool to record the subgingival temperature at the periodontally compromised sites to detect, diagnose and formulate a treatment plan for the same. The technology is developed by Dr Biju Thomas, ABSMIDS and Dr Shashikantha Karinka, NMAMIT. The technology is taken up by Dentronics Pvt. Ltd.

Diagnostic technology on rapid detection of Salmonella

Nitte (DU) and Biokart India Pvt Ltd signed a technology transfer agreement for the technology on isothermal detection of Salmonella spp. in food. The Technology was developed by Dr Biswajit, Associate professor at NUCSER to be commercialized by M/S Biokart India Pvt Ltd. This is very important for dairy, meat and fish industries since the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has zero tolerance for the presence of Salmonella in processed foods.

Technology on phage application for vibriosis

A technology transfer agreement was signed between Nitte (DU) and Mangalore Biotech lab for the technology on bacteriophage therapy. The technology aims to control diseases caused by Vibrio spp in aquaculture using bacteriophages as alternatives to antibiotics. This was developed by Dr Juliet Mohanraj and was licensed to M/S Mangalore Biotech Laboratory.

Diagnostic technology for the detection of Vibrio vulnificus

A test kit for detection of Vibrio vulnificus, pathogen that can cause severe infections in immunocompromised people has been developed at Nitte by Dr Krishna Kumar B. The technology is now transferred to M/S Jigsawbio Solutions Pvt Ltd
