DST TEC, in Association with AIC Nitte, Organizes National Technology Day 2026 Celebration at NitteDU

The National Technology Day 2026 celebration was held on 11 May 2026 at Avishkar Hall, 7th Floor, ABSMIDS, at 11:30 a.m. The event was jointly organized by the DST-NU Technology Enabling Centre, AIC Nitte, and the Institution’s Innovation Council of NitteDU under the aegis of Nitte (Deemed to be University)
The program was conducted to highlight the efforts made by different institutions of Nitte (Deemed to be University) in the area of innovation and technology. The Chief Guest for the program was Dr Lazar Mathew, Former Director, DRDO and Senior Advisor, MAHE, Manipal. He delivered the National Technology Day lecture on the topic “MedTech - Current Indian Scenario” reflecting the growing importance of medical technology in healthcare, research, and translational applications in India. The Guest of Honor was Dr Ramesh Bhat, Head of Research, Father Muller Medical College, Father Muller Charitable Institutions, Mangalore. The function was presided over by Dr M. S. Moodithaya, Vice Chancellor, Nitte DU. Mr Puneeth Rai, CEO, AIC Nitte, Dr Sandeep Rai, Dean, KSHEMA, and Dr Mithra Hegde, Principal, ABSMIDS were also present in the event and their presence reflected the collaborative spirit and institutional importance of the occasion.
Dr Indrani Karunasagar, Director (DST TEC & Projects), NitteDU welcomed the gathering and gave the opening remarks. Dr Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor (Research & Patents), NitteDU, introduced the chief guest to the gathering. During the program, inventors of 7 granted patents, interdisciplinary teams working on 10 technologies developed, and 5 start-ups registered were awarded with certificates for their achievement.
The chief guest addressed the audience on the current status and future potential of MedTech in India. The lecture emphasized the need for innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technology-driven solutions to meet the evolving demands. He explained about Technology Readiness Level and how to support innovations and inventions to cross the hurdle of “valley of death”. He urged that different disciplines need to come together to address the problem of technology based devices in healthcare and cited the success stories such as Jaipur foot that was made more acceptable through materials developed by DRDO and Chitra valve. He specifically emphasised that we need to develop ‘Projects that leads to Products’, rather than publication oriented inventions that have no role to play in welfare of the society. The session provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in the medical technology sector and encouraged participants to think about the role of research, innovation and IPR in societal advancement.
Around 150 participants including medical practitioners, research scholars, staff and students from various institutes of Nitte (Deemed to be University) attended the event.
