GAVIS 2026 (Global Animal Production & Veterinary Industry Summit 2026) is an international conference and exhibition focused on advancing animal production, veterinary medicine, livestock sustainability, food security, adopting One Health approach. Held from 21–23 July 2026 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), Malaysia, the summit brought together veterinarians, animal scientists, researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and academia under the theme "One Voice, One Health, One Future."
Prof. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar was invited as a plenary speaker to deliver a lecture on “Genomic Resources to Understand Antimicrobial Resistance in a One Health Framework with a Focus on Aquaculture.” Her presentation highlighted antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a major global One Health challenge, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, plant, and environmental health. Particular attention was given to the role of intensive aquaculture, where the extensive use of antibiotics can accelerate the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across aquatic ecosystems and beyond.
The lecture showcased the importance of genomic technologies, including whole-genome sequencing (WGS), metagenomics, and resistome databases, in identifying AMR determinants, monitoring resistance trends, tracing transmission pathways, and detecting emerging threats. Prof. Karunasagar emphasized that integrating genomic data with phenotypic and epidemiological information provides a comprehensive understanding of resistance mechanisms and supports evidence-based interventions.
Concluding the session, she highlighted that WGS offers high-resolution detection of AMR genes and resistance-associated mutations, making it an indispensable tool for surveillance across clinical, food, environmental, and aquaculture sectors. She further noted that ongoing advances in sequencing technologies, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence will significantly enhance AMR surveillance, improve antimicrobial stewardship, and strengthen global efforts to control antimicrobial resistance within the One Health framework.
GAVIS 2026 was organized by the Malaysian Veterinary Medical Association (MAVMA), Malaysian Society of Animal Production (MSAP), Asian-Australasian Dairy Goat Network (AADGN), Malaysian Association of Veterinary Pathology (MAVP), Malaysian Association of Companion Industry (MACAMI), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), along with support from Malaysian Animal Health and Nutrition Industries Association (MAHNIA), Malaysian Animal Feed Additives and Nutrition Association (MAFAV), Malaysian Association of Zoological Medicine (MAZM), Malaysian Small Animal Veterinary Association (MSAVA), Wildlife and Exotic Veterinarian Special Interest Group (WEVSIG) and Yayasan Kebajikan Haiwan Kebangsaan Malaysia (YKHKM).
