Nitte (Deemed to be University) and the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, Odisha signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 20 August 2026, marking an important step towards strengthening collaborative research, innovation and capacity building in the area of One Health. The MoU brings together the complementary expertise, infrastructure and research capabilities of NitteDU and ICAR-CIFA to foster multidisciplinary collaboration addressing emerging challenges at the interface of human, animal, environmental and aquatic health. The partnership is envisioned to facilitate joint research initiatives, knowledge exchange, utilisation of mutual research facilities and expertise, scientific capacity building, and the development of innovative solutions with relevance to One Health and sustainable aquaculture.
The MoU was exchanged in the Board Room of Nitte University between Dr Harsha Halahalli, Registrar, NitteDU, and Dr P. K. Sahoo, Director, ICAR-CIFA. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr M. S. Moodithaya; Dr Prasad B. Shetty, Comptroller of Examinations; Dr Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor, Research and Patent; Dr Indrani Karunasagar, Director, Projects and DST-TEC; Dr Anirban Chakraborty, Director, NUCSER; Mr Nitya Chethan Chakravarthy, Legal Officer, NitteDU; Dr Deekshit, Associate Professor, NUCSER and staff of the DST-TEC team were present on occasion.
Through the collaboration, NitteDU and ICAR-CIFA envision greater utilisation of their respective research infrastructure, specialised facilities, scientific expertise and human resources to undertake collaborative projects and generate evidence-based solutions with practical applications, particularly in the context of designation of Nitte DU as FAO Reference Center for Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity. The partnership is also expected to facilitate joint programmes, workshops, student and researcher engagement, and opportunities for capacity building. The MoU reflects a shared commitment to advancing integrated and sustainable approaches to One Health, particularly through collaborative research that connects aquatic ecosystems, animal health, environmental sustainability and public health. By combining institutional strengths and fostering interdisciplinary partnerships, NitteDU and ICAR-CIFA aim to contribute to scientific innovation and strengthen solutions to emerging health challenges.
The MoU signing was facilitated by the DST-NUTEC, which has been instrumental in promoting institutional collaborations and translating research expertise into impactful partnerships.
