Based on the excellent work carried out by Nitte University in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of United Nations, Nitte was designated one of the four globally recognized FAO Reference Centers for Antimicrobial Resistance and Aquaculture Biosecurity for a four-year period, 2022-2026. The performance of Nitte as Reference Center was evaluated by FAO and Nitte was redesignated as FAO Reference Center for a further period of 5 years, 2026 to 2031. The redesignation ceremony was held at FAO Headquarters, Rome on the sidelines of the FAO Global Conference for Actions on One Health, September 21-23. Nitte delegation that attended this global Conference included Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Vice Chancellor; Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Head of Nitte FAO Reference Center and Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, formerly, Senior Food Safety Officer at FAO and presently, Advisor, Nitte FAO Reference Center. Dr. M.S. Moodithaya received the redesignation certificate on September 23 from the Deputy Director General, Mr. Godfrey Magwenzi in the presence of Assistant Director Generals, Dr. Thanawat Tiensin and Dr. Manuel Barange. This was followed by a meeting of all Reference Center delegates from China, US, Italy and India for two day workshop on experience sharing and developing work plan during September 24-25. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar and Dr. Indrani Karunasagar made presentations of India experience in this workshop and led Working Group to develop action plan. The Workshop was hosted by the Instituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Lazio delle Toscana (IZSLT), Rome and was attended by not only representatives of FAO Reference Centers, but also other global experts in the area of aquatic animal health and biosecurity. A number of activities in collaboration with FAO and with other Reference Centers in China, UK, USA and Italy were planned in this workshop.
