EXPERT TALK ON STARTUP AND FUNDING ECOSYSTEM IN AGRI-FOOD SECTOR

The Nitte University DST Technology Enabling Centre, Institution Innovation Council and NUCSER jointly organized an expert lecture on “Startup and funding ecosystem in agri-food sector” on 06 February 2024 at the University Auditorium, Paneer campus. Mr Arvind Modi, Partner Sathguru Catalysers, Hyderabad was the resource person. He has over 12 years of experience in Venture Capital (VC) & Private Equity (PE) Investments. His area of expertise includes VC/PE investment management, capital structuring, valuations, consulting and has excellent business acumen with proven abilities in investment decisions. Dr Anirban Chakraborty welcomed the gathering and Dr Indrani Karunasagar introduced the resource person. In his expert lecture, Mr Modi detailed about grants, equity and debt and the difference between them. He also gave an insight about the Venture capitalists, their functions and consideration, market scalability and defensibility. He explained the valley of death of startups importance of angel investors. He elaborated on what startup founders need to know when preparing to pitch their business plan to the venture capitalists. He gave a glimpse of startup funding statistics along with valuation of Indian Start-up Economy. He also noted that startups may not have all expertise and they could use outsourcing to save time, cost & energy. He urged the young entrepreneurs to be conscious about cost and see that each cash burn adds to growth of the company and not to spend on corporate gifts for coworkers or clients. Until the idea is executed or the company takes off he advised the statrups not to waste time and money on brand name, logo and similar issues. He shared certain tips with the startups from his experience that bigger market size does not guarantee success and can mislead everyone. He also said hiring more number of task performers (doers) than managers will help in more productivity. The lecture was followed by an active participation of audience in question answer session and concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by the Director R&D Dr Praveen Kumar Shetty. The program was attended by 85 students and 17 faculties of constituent colleges of Nitte (DU)

Incubation Facilities for Startups - Creating Impact in the Startups Ecosystem

Team TEC attended the Symposium on Incubation Facilities for Startups - Creating Impact in the Startups Ecosystem organized by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Saturday, 9th December, 2023 at KCCI Meeting Hall, Chamber Building, Bunder, Mangaluru. KCCI President Ananthesh V Prabhu, gave the introductory remarks and mentioned how KCCI along with a Startups sub-committee headed by Vishwas Shishir, are striving hard to nurture and support startup ecosystem in this region of the state (Mangalore). Vishwas Shishir, chairman of Startups sub-committee in his address highlighted how institutions and universities can be hub of startup and innovation. He also explained how young minds can avail the facilities to start their venture. Dr Inv. Shivakiran Makam, CEO, Atal Incubation Centre, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur was the speaker of the symposium and spoke on the topic – Understanding incubation dynamics. The speaker provided valuable insights on new era in Modern India that is focused on entrepreneurship ecosystem. He stated how incubators act as catalyst to bridge the gap between industry and academia. He gave a gist of incubators present in country, roadmap to startups, details of funding schemes and how students can focus on regional resources to bring out innovation. He stressed that startups should focus on both innovation as well as revenue generation. He also stated that incubators have the potential to contribute to the economic growth of the region as well as the country and beyond that incubators act as breeding ground for startups. He further addressed various queries of the audience. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Anand Kannan, Director, Global Services, IFIA, Bengaluru. The panellists included, Asim Syed Sheeraz, CEO, Yenepoya Technology Incubator, Deepthi Prabhu, Co-Founder, Herb Fusion, Jnanashree Arjun Rao, Senior Branch Manager, Bank of Baroda, Bondel branch. The symposium brought together incubators, entrepreneurs and startups, aspirant students, business owners, bankers and stakeholders under common roof leading to a very productive discussion session and networking. Team TEC Nitte, could interact and establish network with Dr Francisca Tej, WiZdom Institutions Network, Mangalore; Mr Shrikar, Meditation Tranier, Heartfullness Institute, Mangalore; Mr Ashley, Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology, Puttur. Dr. Ashajyothi Rai, Chairperson, Chiraayu Ayurveda Clinic expressed her desire to collaborate with TEC, Nitte for evidence-based trials under Ayush Systems. Team TEC actively interacted with students and faculty of PA First grade college who expressed their interest in development of fisheries based techniques.

INDO-NORWAY WORKSHOP ON AQUATIC ANIMAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT

The DST Technology Enabling Center along with Nitte University Center for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) organized an Indo-Norway workshop on Aquatic Animal Health Management on 05 December, 2023. This workshop discussed joint projects between Nitte University and Nord University, Bodo, Norway, which are dealing with technologies such as vaccine development and delivery in aquaculture as well as bacteriophage therapy that can serve as an alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Director, NUCSER welcomed all speakers and delegates. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director (projects) explained the back ground for the workshop, joint collaboration ongoing with Norway and joint publications that came out of the collaboration. She recalled the excellent experience of the Indian delegation led by her consisting of Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Dr. Biswajit Maiti along with two PhD scholars during their visit to Nord University. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar emphasized the importance of aquaculture in fish production globally and in India. Dr. Hetroney Mweemba Munang’Andu, Professor, Nord University highlighted the importance of international collaboration to bring in complementary expertise and experience.

FAO along with four reference centers organized a webinar “Avoiding AMR together: Ensuring healthy and safe Aquatic foods” in connection with the antibiotic awareness week, which was attended by 200 participants. Dr Iddya Karunasagar spoke on “Aquatic organisms of zoonotic concern” and Dr Indrani Karunasagar spoke on “AMR and One Health”.
